AP Flood Relief Update
Date: Friday, 29 October 2010

Dear Spandana Members,

Exactly same time last year, we were allfinding ways to save lives of the flood victims of AP in Kurnool, Mahaboobnagar and Krishna districts. Hundreds of Spandana members supported this cause with donation, prayers, support and volunteering. You are aware that we were working with AP Govt to construct the houses in Flood Affected areas. When every one is forgetting about this, we at Spandana are continuosely working with Govt officials to make a Difference in the lives of flood victims.

Here are some updates:

  • We signed the MOU with AP Govt to construct 90 houses in Kurnool in April 2010. The project is focussed to help 2 villages(Marali & Gudikambali) of  Kowthalam mandal. Please find the Spandana MOU with AP Govt for your information.
  • We are working with the officials to name the new villages with Spandana name. There are few Telugu Associations from USA were part of fundraising efforts last year, we are working with officials in India to include names of the organizations on the name plate of the houses that are fudned by Spandana Foundation.

If any of you are visiting India and would like to visit the villages under construction, please let us know we will get you connected with Govt officials in Kurnool.

Date: Sunday, 10 January 2010

Dear Spandana Members,
Thank you very much for generous donations so far to support the victims of natural calamity. We have been talking to various NGOs and Govt officials on helping the people who got affected by the floods in AP. We are evaluating the following projects to execute with the help of Govt and Private participation.

1. Construction of Houses under "Indiramma" program. Govt is giving around 68,450 Rs. towards construction of house which need over 10,000 Rs. from the private or NGO for each house. Construction has to be taken care by the NGO with the collaboration with the beneficiary.

2. Construction of Schools: This requires lots of funds over Rs.15 lacs per school to construct 5 rooms. Govt is not showing much interest for this project at this time as the priorities are different. We would like to take up this project only with Govt funding and partial support from Spandana Foundation.

3. Back to School: The govt or any other NGO is not working towards sending students back to school. The students lost all their text books, notebooks, uniforms and other necessities during the flood. We are working with the district officials to see whether we can provide the basic necessities to all the flood affected students with the partial funding from Govt. This project will help over 125,000 students in Kurnool and Mahabubnagar districts. We are still waiting for the confirmed support and policy from District officials to take up this project.

As we have clarity on the Project-1 (Construction of homes), the Spandana core team discussed the project and decided to take up the construction of 100 houses in the Kurnool and Mahabubnagar districts. We have already initiated the discussions with the AP Housing Board and looking for collaboration with them for the construction by providing our part of the fund. We have option to choose the villages that we would like to adopt. We would want Spandana volunteers from these 2 districts to come forward and select the villages that are close to your native place or places that you have contacts. This would help us to make this project more meaningful. We are here by providing the information provided by the Govt officials for your ready reference.
