Spandana Action Plan

Floods have come and gone but their impact prevails. Spandana has launched the flood relief program in the first hour of impact. Goal remains to collect funds and use them responsibly by planning and executing with precision at grass-root level. We made a lot of progress. We want to say a big Thank You to all our donors. We appreciate your help and bow to your timely help. As we always say, a thought to respond and help goes a long way. Thank You! We are now more confident than ever to meet our milestone of $30,000. A special thanks to NJ based consulting company Smart Insight who came forward to provide matching (1:1/2) grant of $10,000 for the first $20,000 fund we raise.

The 3 questions that we asked ourselves are

· How should we group our relief activities?

· How should we distribute funds to each activity group?

· How should we execute an activity to be most effective?

Spandana core team has divided the list of activities into 3 groups.

1. Immediate Relief Activities

2. Post Relief Activities

3. Permanent Relief Activities

Here is a list of activities in each group that will give all of us an idea of what these groups mean.

Permanent Relief Activities –These activities will have a permanent and deeply rooted impact while allowing us to collect more funds as necessary. We have learnt from our past experiences that relief efforts subside considerably as media attention diminishes. People are left without any help. Also, it is only with time that the real issues emerge which can be given due attention. This is where Spandana would like to be most effective.

· Construct houses/schools with the help of Government

· Adopt kids/senior citizens who lost their families

· Take ownership of kids education until they graduate

· Open for input and more suggestions. Please keep them coming.

Post Relief Activities – These activities will have an impact for a reasonable duration at reasonable costs.

· Health camps to avoid epidemic

· Provide rice, wheat, dhal, salt, vegetables etc

· Provide funds to repair schools/houses

· Provide funds to students for purchasing books and necessary items

· Provide temporary shelter to organize classes for schools

· Open for input and more suggestions. Please keep them coming.

Immediate Relief Activities –These activities will provide immediate attention with a temporary and short impact at expensive local prices of commodities.

· Provide ready to eat food, milk (for kids), and drinking water

· Provide 1 pair of clothes (per person), 1 blanket (per person) and basic utensils

· Provide shelter for a group of families

· Assist in cleaning surrounding

· Disease prevention activities

· Assist in dead body cremation

· Provide cattle fodder

· Open for input and more suggestions

We would like to share the action plan with all of you. Thanks to all our volunteers and donors whose input has helped us shape this plan. Please continue to share your thoughts. Your feedback is of immense help.

Spandana core team prepared funds utilization chart as below:

Target date for this fund raising = Jan-1st, 2010

Total estimated fund: $30,000+

Spandana will form focus groups and partner with other NGOs who will help us to identify the set of activities in each group. Each focus group will be working in different flood affected areas. This will enable us to do the best at a local level in each area. We are positive that hundreds of our volunteers will make this happen. They are working towards meeting this goal as we prepare this document. We congratulate them for their honest and selfless work.
